Springfield, Mass. – April 27, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team earned a doubleheader split with WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. WPI picked up a 13-2 win in the opener before Springfield rallied for a 9-8 triumph in the second contest.
With today's results, Springfield is no 15-18 on the year and host Coast Guard on Tuesday.

Game One- WPI 13, Springfield 2
Andrew Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) produced three of the Pride's nine hits in the setback. After the Engineers totaled two runs in the first inning, Springfield bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to even things up. Singles from
Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) and Sweet and a walk from
Jeff Swift (Mechanicville, N.Y.) loaded up the bases with no outs, before
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) blistered a two-run base knock up the middle.
However, WPI responded with five runs in the top of the fourth, fueled by a two-run triple which Jacob Hand was followed by a two-run homerun from Andrew Cash. The Engineers tacked on two runs in the sixth and were able to produced four runs in the eighth despite not registering a hit en route to the victory.
Game Two - Springfield 9, WPI 8
The Pride used eight unanswered runs over a three-inning stretch midway through the second contest to rally for a 9-8 win over WPI to earn the split.
Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) went 4-for-4 at the plate, while both
Andrew Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) and
Ryan Delaney (Ellington, Conn.) each drove in three runs.
Mathew Robinson (Fairfeld, Conn.) earned the win in relief as he tossed three innings of shutout ball where he struck out three and did not allow a hit.
After WPI produced a pair of runs in the first, Springfield has able to cut their lead in half thanks to a two-out rally which was capped off by a run-scoring single from
Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) which plated
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) who previously reached after getting hit by a pitch. The Engineers added two more runs in both the second and third innings to have their lead balloon to 6-1, but the Pride would respond with five runs in the bottom of the third to even things up at 6-6. Springfield would account for five hits in the frame, with Sweet hammering a two-run double to left center with the bases loaded before
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) followed with a two-run single up the middle.
The hosts took the lead for good in the sixth after Delaney connected for a triple to right center which scored Traversa and Sorgi. The Engineers got two runs back in the seventh and had runners on second and third, only to have
Shamus Biggs (Virginia Beach, Va.) come through with a key strikeout to keep Springfield on top, 9-8. WPI would later put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth, but
Mason Veronezi (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was able to complete the save opportunity by getting a groundout to seal the win.
