Springfield, Mass. – April 5, 2024 – Springfield College men's tennis earned its second straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season as the Pride topped Wheaton College, 8-1, on the Appleton Tennis Courts this afternoon.
Springfield, now winners of two consecutive matches against Wheaton in the all-time series, improved to 3-6 overall and to 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton dropped to 5-8, 1-3.
The Pride took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles and never looked back en route to the conference win.
Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, Mexico) and
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) topped Jaime Galligo and Jake Murray, 8-5, at No. 1, while
Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall, Conn.) and
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) at No. 2 and
Phakin Thongboonchareon (Bangkok, Thailand) and
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) at No. 3 won by duplicate 8-6 scores.
Springfield won five of six matches in singles play highlighted by a thrilling 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) win for Kimoto over Galligo at No. 1. After splitting the first two sets at No. 2, Villanueva Abad's opponent retired as the Pride led 5-0.
Thongboonchareon at No. 3 (6-3, 6-4), Gomulka at No. 5 (7-6, 6-2) and
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4) all won their matches in straight sets this afternoon for Springfield.
Springfield will host Salve Regina at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon for another NEWMAC matchup.
