Men's Lacrosse Surges Past Clark, 13-5

Springfield, Mass. – April 6, 2024 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team earned its third-straight victory as it raced past Clark, 13-5, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The win boosts Springfield's record to 3-8, 2-2 in conference play while the Cougars dropped to 3-9, 0-4.

Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) paced the offense with five assists and two goals while Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) racked up three goals and three assists.  Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was dominant on face-offs, going 18-for-22 with eight ground balls while Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) notched 10 saves in the victory.

Springfield opened up the scoring at the 12:09 mark when Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) stuck a shot from the right wing, only to have the visitors even things up just over four minutes later on a transition strike from Tate Gorman.  Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) was able to tuck a shot under the crossbar at the 5:18 mark to give Springfield the lead for good.

In the second, Degnan finished a cross-crease pass from Gage Sperlonga (Feeding Hills, Mass.) just over two minutes into the frame before inside finishes by Nick Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) and Stensrud 27 seconds apart gave the Pride a 5-1 lead heading into the halftime break.

After Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) stepped into a shot from 15 yards out to open up the third-quarter scoring at 14:02, Clark scored its first goal in nearly 25 minutes on a goal from Colin Howard.  The hosts would outscore the Cougars by a 3-1 margin through the remainder of the frame as Stensrud, Tierney, and Savastano all delivered markers.

In the fourth, Springfield pulled away for the 13-5 victory, getting four goals in the frame.  The burst that was started by a transition goal from Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) inside the opening three-plus minutes before Tierney, Sperlonga, and Stensrud all found the back of the cage to close out the afternoon.

The Pride will play again next Saturday when it travels to take on Coast Guard.
