Cambridge, Mass. - April 9, 2024 -The Springfield College baseball team let an early three-run advantage slip away as it was edged by MIT, 4-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday.
The win boosted MIT's record to 9-12, 1-6 against conference opponents while Springfield dropped to 13-11, 0-5.
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) and
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) each had a pair of hits in the setback for the Pride, while
Nate Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.) went 6.0 innings on the mound, giving up three earned runs off five hits. Â
In the second inning, Dunaisky produced a leadoff and single and stole second to move into scoring position. With two outs,
Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) then lifted a ball over the right field fence for a two-run shot to give Springfield a 2-0 edge. The visitors added to their lead in fourth as they again took advantage of a leadoff hit, this time a double from
Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.). After a sacrifice moved him over to third, a wild pitch would allow DiMauro to race home from third to make it a 3-0 contest. Â
However, MIT would even things up with three runs in the sixth as it delivered a trio of hits, including a two-run double. The Engineers added the go-ahead run in the second as they benefitted from a Springfield fielding error on the leadoff batter which allowed them to have a runner reach second base. A run-scoring single would follow and the hosts would allow just one hit over the final two innings by the Pride as to earn the conference win.Â
Springfield will host Emerson for a conference doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 pm.
