Men's Tennis Eases By UMass Boston In Fall Opener

Springfield, Mass. – September 19, 2024 – The Springfield College men's tennis team opened its fall season with a 7-0 win over UMass Boston this afternoon on the Appleton Tennis Courts.

Under the new NCAA tennis pilot program for the 2024-2025 year, all matches will be played to seven points. One point for doubles (two out of three) and then six points for singles matches.

The Pride rolled through doubles play with 6-0 wins at No. 1 by Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico) and Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and at No. 3 by Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) and Marten Schalin (Taby, Sweden). Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) and Akito Shimamura (Hirono Futaba, Japan) were victorious by a 6-2 final at No. 2.

In singles play, Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) blanked their opponents, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. At No. 4 and No. 6, Zach Taub (New Windsor, Conn.) and Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) won by 6-1, 6-0 finals. Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) was victorious by a 6-2, 6-0 final at No. 1 to round out the day.

Springfield travels to Endicott for a non-conference tilt on September 24 beginning at 3:30 pm.
