Northampton, Mass. – January 11, 2025 – The Springfield College women's basketball team fell to No. 9/10 nationally-ranked Smith College, 70-39, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Smith improved to 12-1 overall, while Springfield dipped to 8-5.
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) paced Springfield's offense with nine points, while
Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) pulled down a team-best seven boards. Hannah Martin led the host Pioneers with 14 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the floor, while Ally Landau added ten points of her own in the win that saw ten different student-athletes score at least a point for Smith.
As a team, Smith shot 48.4-percent from the floor and converted six times from behind the arc, while Springfield shot just 37.5-percent from the floor and knocked down one three point bucket.
Smith raced out to a 9-2 advantage over the first 3:15 of the game and never looked back. In the first half alone, the Pioneers forced 20 turnovers and turned them into 21 points. Springfield was only able to muster five points in the second quarter as the score stood at 39-17 at the break.
Springfield scored six of the first eight points of the third quarter, but once again in the second half the Pride turned the ball over ten times leading to 13 points for Smith as the Pioneers scored 46 points in the paint, 34 points off turnovers and 27 points on the fast break en route to the 70-39 final.
Springfield will travel to Babson College for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
