Babson Clips Women's Basketball in Non-Conference Finale, 67-65

Babson Park, Mass. – January 15, 2025 – In its regular season non-conference finale, the Springfield College women's basketball team came up just short to Babson College, 67-65, on Wednesday night on the road.

Both teams pushed their records to 8-6 on the season heading into New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday. Springfield will host MIT at Mount Holyoke College at 3:30 pm, while Babson welcomes Emerson at 1:00 pm.

Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) led Springfield's offensive attack with a team-high 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor. The senior tallied 13 of her 21 points in the third quarter alone. Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) chipped in with 13 points of her own which included three shots from behind the arc, while Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) pulled down seven boards, dished out four assists and scored four points on the night.

Katelyn Mollica led Babson with 21 points with six three-point buckets. Emily Flynn added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Samantha Reale tallied 16 points for the homestanding Beavers.

As a team, Springfield shot at a higher clip than Babson from the floor as the Pride knocked down 42.2-percent of its shots, but Babson's ten three pointers ended up being the difference as the Beavers hit seven from behind the arc in the first half alone. Springfield also recorded 34 points in the paint compared to just 18 for Babson on the night.

Springfield jumped out to a 10-5 edge just four minutes into the game following a trey from Lucas off a pass from Leary, but Babson ended the quarter on a 17-2 run which saw the beaver shoot 6-for-7 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc for a 22-12 lead after one.

The Pride worked back to tie the score at 28-28 with 2:38 left in the second following nine straight points which included a trey from Lucas as well as two layups from Leary and a layup from Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Babson, however, ended the half with a pair of three-point buckets from Mollica and Flynn and a layup from Reale for a 36-32 edge at the break.

Springfield trailed by four 56-52 after a layup from Reale to open the fourth, but Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) buried a three pointer before layups from Hess and Czeremcha gave Springfield a 59-56 lead with 6:40 to play – its first lead since the first quarter. Flynn once again answered for the Beavers with a three pointer to tie the score at 59-59 and Babson closed the game outscoring Springfield by an 11-6 margin for the 67-65 final. Springfield shot just 3-for-11 over the final stretch of the game and Babson forced a pair of crucial turnovers to secure the win on Wednesday night.
