Women's Basketball Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Opener

South Hadley, Mass. – January 18, 2025 – The Springfield College women's basketball team fell to MIT, 67-42, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Mount Holyoke College.

MIT improved to 5-10 overall and to 1-0 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 8-7, 0-1.

Springfield was led by Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points, while Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.)registered seven points and three boards in 16 minutes off the bench. 
 
Elise Harvey led all scorers and powered MIT's offense with 21 points in addition to a team-best eight rebounds, while Kamsi Nwogu added 14 points, five boards and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench for the Engineers.

Tied at five, Springfield embarked on a 7-2 run for a 12-7 edge late in the first quarter following a three point play by Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.). The Pride scored the final six points of the opening stanza for an 18-9 lead through one.

MIT then outscored Springfield by a 23-6 margin in the second quarter and held the Pride to just a 15.4 shooting percentage in the stanza as the Engineers took a 31-24 lead at halftime. The Engineers also limited the Pride to just seven points in the third as over the middle two quarters MIT outscored Springfield, 43-13. Nwogu led MIT with seven points in the second, while Harvey led the Engineers with nine points in the third.

Springfield scored the opening four points of the fourth on a layup by Czeremcha and a jumper by Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.), but MIT went on to defeat the Pride, 67-42.

As a team, Springfield shot just 24.6-percent from the floor and scored 18 points in the paint, while MIT shot 43.9-percent from the floor and knocked down nine shots from behind the arc.

Springfield will travel to Coast Guard on Wednesday, January 22 for its next NEWMAC game beginning at 7:00 pm.
