Czeremcha Scores 1000th Career Point in 77-54 Women's Basketball Win at Coast Guard

New London, Conn. – January 22, 2025 – Senior Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) became the 18th student-athlete in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points as she recorded 26 points to lead the Springfield College women's basketball team to a dominant 77-54 win at the Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Roland Hall on Wednesday night.

Springfield snapped its four game losing streak to improve to 9-7 overall and to 1-1 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard dropped to 12-4, 1-1.

Czeremcha led all scorers in the game with a 26 point performance on 11-for-16 shooting from the floor in addition to six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Junior Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) also had a standout night for the Pride with 23 points, a career-best 13 rebounds, four steals and a block with her fourth double-double of the campaign, while sophomore Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) chipped in with 12 points all which came from behind the arc this evening.

Coast Guard was paced by Dorothy Scott, who tallied 19 points in a complete 40 minutes of play, while Kelly Hagerty recorded eight points and a team-best eight boards in the setback.

After a tightly contested opening ten minutes of play that saw neither team gain more than a six point advantage, the score sat even at 26 with 7:09 to play in the second. At that point, a trey from Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) ignited a 14-0 run that saw Czeremcha register seven of her 26 points on the night as Springfield shot 5-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from the stripe over the stretch for a 40-26 lead. The Bears were able to pull within seven prior to halftime on a trio of made shots, but the Pride took a 40-33 advantage into the break.

Springfield opened the third on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 15 points, 50-35, as the Pride shot 52.6-percent and converted ten times from the floor in the stanza. Springfield also held Coast Guard to just a 35.7-percent effort form the floor in the third to balloon its lead to 17, 61-44, at the end of the quarter.  Finney once again sparked the run for Springfield as she opened the third with a floater before a jumper from Czeremcha gave the Pride its first double-digit lead of the game, 44-33. Czeremcha fueled the run with six points and capped it off with a layup on a feed by Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.).

Czeremcha began the scoring for Springfield in the fourth with the Pride's first five points of the quarter before a layup from Laughlan pushed the lead to 21. Then with 2:48 remaining in the game, Laughlan fed the ball to Czeremcha, who converted the layup for her 1,000th career point. A trey by Lucas and a layup from Leary late in the game accounted for the 77-54 final.

As a team, Springfield was dominant on the glass holding a 45-27 differential which included a season-best 20 offensive boards. Springfield also outscored Coast Guard, 48-18, in the paint and shot 44.4-percent from the floor in the win. The Pride are also now 4-0 this year when scoring 70 or more points.

Springfield will continue NEWMAC play at Wellesley on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
