Leary Powers Women's Basketball Past Wellesley, 57-33

Wellesley, Mass. – January 25, 2025 – Junior Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) registered 24 points and nine rebounds to power the Springfield College women's basketball team to a 57-33 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win at Wellesley College this afternoon.

Springfield improved to 10-7 overall and to 2-1 in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley dropped to 6-10, 1-2.

Leary continued her outstanding week with 24 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the floor and a 3-for-6 effort from behind the arc in addition to nine rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) posted 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, six boards, three assists and a steal. Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) shined in 25 minutes off the bench with eight points and seven rebounds.

As a team, Springfield shot 42.1-percent (24-for-57) from the floor, sank a trio of shots from behind the arc and went 6-for-7 at the charity stripe. The Pride also scored 32 points in the paint and dominated the glass with a 46-24 advantage in rebounds. Springfield also held Wellesley to just nine buckets in the run of play this afternoon and forced 13 turnovers.

Springfield raced out to an 11-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game that saw Czeremcha tally six of her 12 points on the day. Wellesley finally scored on a jumper by Trinity Barrow, but a layup by Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) and a jumper from Hess gave Springfield a 15-5 lead through one.

The Pride continued its barrage in the second as Leary opened the scoring in the stanza with a layup before pulling ahead by 14 on back-to-back shots by Hess. Leary drained a three with less than 10 seconds left in the second as Springfield took a 30-15 lead into the break.

Wellesley came out of the locker room and scored six straight points to open the third, but Springfield answered with ten straight points of its own capped on a trey by Leary for a 19 point lead at 40-21 late in the quarter.

The Pride shot 6-for-12 in the the fourth and converted four times down the stretch at the free throw line en route to the 57-33 win.

Springfield will host nationally-ranked Smith College in Blake Arena on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm.
