Springfield, Mass. – January 29, 2025 – The Springfield College women's basketball team fell to No. 6/7 Smith College, 71-36, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday evening in Blake Arena.
Smith improved to 16-1 overall and to 4-0 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 10-8, 2-2.
Ally Landau paced Smith with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor which included five first half three point buckets, while Springfield received 11 points from both
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) and
Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) in the effort. As a team, Smith shot 43.1-percent from the floor, while the Pioneers held the Pride to just a 29.4-percent effort tonight. Smith also turned 23 Springfield turnovers into 26 points, while both teams secured 35 boards in the game.
Smith scored the first 12 points of the game before a layup from Finney put Springfield on the board four minutes into the contest. Finney accounted for Springfield's first seven points of the game, but the visiting Pioneers took a 21-9 lead after one. Smith buried seven of 14 shots from behind the arc over the opening 20 minutes of play and ballooned its lead to 24 points, 41-17, at halftime.
Springfield scored the first five points of the fourth on a three point play from
Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) and layup from Leary, but Smith outscored the Pride, 13-2, over the final eight minutes of the contest to account for the 71-36 final.
Springfield will travel to Wheaton for a NEWMAC tilt on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
