Women's Basketball Falls to Wheaton in Final Seconds of Regulation

Norton, Mass. – February 1, 2025 – A three point bucket by Kennis Jasperson with six seconds remaining in regulation sent Wheaton College over Springfield College women's basketball, 52-49, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) battle on Saturday afternoon in Norton.

Wheaton improved to 7-12 overall and to 3-2 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 10-9, 2-3. The win for Wheaton was its first over Springfield since a 64-53 triumph in Norton on January 10, 2015, snapping an 11-game winless streak to the Pride.

Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) guided Springfield with 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points and five boards. As a team, Springfield shot just 33.3-percent from the floor this afternoon against the Lyons. Regan Keyter paced Wheaton with a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double.

Springfield trailed 16-8 early in the second quarter before embarking on an 18-0 run that saw the Pride shoot 7-for-9 from the floor and bury a pair of shots from behind the arc. Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) started the run with a layup and a trey off a feed from Kassidy Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) before Carrano drove to the bucket for two points of her own. Leary then drained a three, Czeremcha knocked down two shots from the line and added two jumpers between a layup from Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) for a 26-16 lead with 3:55 to play in the second.

Wheaton would score the final six points of the half, but Springfield took a 26-22 edge into the break. The Lyons continued their run and scored the first eight points of the third to take a 30-26 lead capping the 14-0 run for the hosts.

Leary buried a three with 4:45 to play in the third to even the score at 34 before she added a layup and a Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) free throw gave Springfield a three point edge, 37-34, through 30 minutes. Neither team was able to score over the final 3:06 of the third quarter.

Both teams traded three point buckets to open the scoring in the fourth as Springfield held a 40-37 edge before a layups from Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) and Czeremcha gave the Pride a 44-37 lead with 6:57 remaining.

Wheaton went on to outscore Springfield 11-2 over a stretch of 4:49 as a layup from Keyter and two free throws from Kiki Walters ultimately gave the hosts a 48-46 lead with less than two minutes to play. Leary sank two shots from the line before both teams sent shooters to go 1-for-2 at the stripe with under 30-seconds left.

Jasperson got open in the corner and buried the three pointer for the Lyons before time expired as Wheaton defeated Springfield, by the 52-49 final.
