Springfield, Mass. – February 5, 2025 – Powered by a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double from
Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.), the Springfield College women's basketball team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 65-43, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday night in Blake Arena.
Springfield improved to 11-9 overall and to 3-3 in NEWMAC play, while Mount Holyoke dipped to 4-16, 0-6. As a team, Springfield produced 23 assists – its second largest output of the season and third time this year the Pride has eclipsed 20 helpers in a game.
Czeremcha shot 8-for-11 from the floor and also registered five steals in addition to her 17 points, while in just 18 minutes,
Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) posted 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting.
Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) registered 15 points in 22 minutes off the bench, while
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) tallied ten boards and four assists for the Pride.
Alex Twomey led Mount Holyoke with a 12 point, 13 rebound double-double in nearly a 40 minute effort.
As a team, Springfield shot 46.9-percent from the floor (30-for-64), which featured a 12-for-18 effort (66.7-percent) in the first quarter alone. Springfield also recorded 38 of its 65 points in the paint and knocked down four shots from the charity stripe.
Springfield knocked down its first seven shots from the floor to open with a 16-3 lead over the first 4:36 of the contest. Two layups from Hess, a jumper from Czeremcha and a layup from
Kassidy Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) gave Springfield a 24-3 advantage before Hess knocked down a trey with seconds to play in the opening quarter as the Pride led 27-5 through ten minutes.
In the first quarter alone, Springfield forced four turnovers from Mount Holyoke and saw both Czeremcha and Hess tally seven points apiece.
Mount Holyoke went on a 9-4 spurt midway through the second, but Czeremcha scored the final four points of the half including one off a feed from
Ella Stair (Newington, Conn.) for a 41-16 lead at the break.
After Springfield outscored Mount Holyoke 27-5 in the first quarter it was a much tighter final three quarters as both teams mustered 38 points over the final 30 minutes of the contest. Springfield built its largest lead of the game of 31 points late in the third quarter at 53-22 following a pair of free throws.
Hess then scored the first points of the fourth for Springfield before Mount Holyoke tallied nine of the final 11 points of the game for the 65-43 final.
Springfield will travel to WPI for a NEWMAC tilt on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
