New London, Conn. – January 16, 2025 – A 13-1 run by Coast Guard midway through the second half sent the homestanding Bears over the Springfield College men's basketball team, 85-76, on Thursday evening in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup in Roland Hall.
Coast Guard improved to 7-7 overall and to 3-2 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield, which has now lost five of its last six contests dropped to 5-9, 2-3.
Springfield's balanced attack saw points from ten different student-athletes tonight highlighted by a 13 point performance from
Zander Robinson (East Hartford, Conn.) on 6-for-9 shooting performance from the floor. Three other student-athletes registered double-digit point totals for Springfield including
Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 12 as well as
Curtiss Blische (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and
John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) both with ten. Blische also led the Pride with seven boards, while
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) dished out a team-best six assists and recorded four steals.
Six different Coast Guard student-athletes also recorded double-digit point totals highlighted by a 16 point performance from Elijah Parent off the bench. Parent knocked down four of his five shots from behind the arc. Trevor Parks also buried four three point buckets as he and Parent accounted for eight of Coast Guard's three's on the night.
A layup from Blische cut Springfield's deficit to just three points at 58-55 with 10:03 left on the clock, but Coast Guard went on its 13-1 run that stretched nearly three minutes on a 6-for-6 performance from the floor which included a trey by Trevor Parks and points from four different cadets.
Trailing by 15 at 71-56, Springfield attempted to climb back into the game with a 9-1 run of its own featuring four points from both Robinson and Flynn to make it a seven point affair with just 2:43 remaining. Coast Guard ultimately made timely free throws down the stretch to account for the 85-76 final. As a team, Coast Guard outscored Springfield by a 12 point margin in the second half after the Pride entered the break with a three point edge heading into the break.
The first half featured points from ten different Springfield student-athletes highlighted by a seven spot from
Cedric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.). As a team, the Pride shot 53.8-percent over the opening 20 minutes of play which included four made buckets from behind the arc.
Springfield jumped out to an 11-6 edge over the first six minutes of the game as a jumper from Livingston as well as three pointers from both Rodriguez and Blische gave the Pride an early lead. The Pride produced another 11-5 run which featured points from five different student-athletes and a layup from Flynn gave Springfield its largest lead of the half of seven points at 24-17 with 10:35 left in the stanza. Coast Guard ultimately knotted the score at 30 before a timely three by
Xoren Livingston (Wayland, Mass.) and a layup from
Hunter Matteson (Dartmouth, Mass) gave Springfield the 39-36 edge at halftime.
Springfield will travel to No. 22 nationally-ranked WPI for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday, January 18 at 3:00 pm.
