Springfield, Mass. – January 2, 2025 – The Springfield College men's basketball team fell to UMaine-Farmington, 91-76, on day two of the 2024-25 Fairfield Inn & Suites Enfield Naismith Classic in Blake Arena this evening.
UMaine-Farmington improved to 5-7, while Springfield dropped to 5-6. For his effort, Chris Hammond of Amherst was named as the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Hammond was joined on the All-Tournament Team by CJ Mitchell of Amherst, Dylan Griffin and Simon Chadbourne of UMaine-Farmington,
Xoren Livingston (Wayland, Mass.) of Springfield and Aamyr Sullivan of Regis.
Livingston guided Springfield's offense with 18 points in addition to six rebounds, while
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) added 17 points, two steals and three boards.
Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) contributed 14 points and three rebounds off the bench, while
Curtiss Blische (Barkhamsted, Conn.) recorded a team-best nine rebounds in the effort.
UMaine-Farmington received 30 points from Chadbourne as well as a 19 point, ten rebound double-double from Griffin. Griffin also registered four blocks, five assists and a steal. Zach McLaughlin was impressive off the bench for the Beavers with 15 points and two boards in just 16 minutes of play.
After
Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put Springfield ahead 2-0 on the first possession of the game, Farmington raced out to a 9-3 lead following a Chadbourne trey and never looked back. Springfield was able to regain the lead at 15-14 on a 10-3 run that was capped on a long range three by Evely. The Beavers, however, answered and converted three straight times from behind the arc to push ahead by eight at 23-15.
Three minutes later, Springfield trailed just three at 29-26 after a layup in the paint by
John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.), but the Beavers embarked on a 9-2 run to push their lead back to ten and eventually took an eight point lead into the halftime break, 45-37.
As a team, UMaine-Farmington converted nine times from three point range in the first half shooting at a 56.3-percent clip from behind the arc over the first 20 minutes of play.
Springfield scored the first four points of the second period and after a three by Livingston cut the deficit to just four at 54-50, but that was as close as the Pride got. Springfield's 38.2-percent shooting from the floor in the second half paired with a trio of turnovers allowed UMaine-Farmington to push its lead back to double figures and to the eventual 15 point win, 91-76.
Today's meeting was the first between the two programs.
UMaine-Farmington shot 54.9-percent as a team from the floor, made 11 three point buckets and went 24-of-29 at the charity stripe, while Springfield was held to just a 40.6-percent effort from the floor for the game.
Springfield will travel to Williams College for its final non-conference game of the regular season on Monday, January 6 at 7:30 pm.
