Patchogue, N.Y. – January 25, 2025 – Junior
Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) registered a career-best 18 kills to lead the No. 7 ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team to a sweep of St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Saturday afternoon. Springfield eased by the Golden Eagles by set scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-21.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III national poll and No. 6 by FrogJump Volleyball is now 2-1 on the season, while St. Joseph's is now 1-2.
Durivage ended the match hitting .615 (18 K - 2 E - 26 TA) with six digs, while
Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) hit .524 (12 K – 1 E – 21 TA) to go along with eight digs and two blocks, and
Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) hit .400 (9 K – 2 E – 15 TA).
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) dished out 45 assists,
Ricardo Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) registered a team-high 11 digs, while
Giancarlo Carrion (San Juan, Puerto Rico)posted a trio of aces and two digs in the sweep. As a team, Springfield produced 53 kills and hit .467 for the match which featured a 15 K – 0 E – 21 TA (.714) effort in the middle set.
Springfield led by just one, 9-8, in the first before embarking on a 12-2 run that featured six kills from Durivage and ended with a swing by Levinson for a 21-10 advantage. The Golden Eagles were able to get a handful of points back, but a swing by DesLauriers terminated the set, 25-16, in favor of the Pride. Springfield hit .516 in the opening set with 19 of its 25 points coming on the kill in addition to three on aces, one on a block and two on errors by the hosts.
Springfield hit a blistering .714 without an error in the second as the Pride used 15 kills and five aces to go ahead two sets to none, 25-16, 25-13. Durivage and DesLauriers combined for nine of Springfield's 15 kills in the stanza. Durivage opened the set with back-to-back kills before Springfield took an eventual 11-6 lead following an ace from
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and forced the hosts to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Pride went on a 7-2 run receiving two kills from both Levinson and
Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) for a double-digit lead, 18-8. Late in the set, an ace from Carrion pushed Springfield's lead to 11 before a swing by
Richard Eber Jr. (Hummelstown, Pa.) ended the set, 25-13.
Springfield produced 19 kills in the third stanza – 13 of which came combined from Durivage and Levinson. Tied at 12, Springfield went on an 8-1 run that featured three kills and two aces from Levinson to push the Pride out in front, 20-13. The hosts were able to get back with two points, 22-20, late in the set, but two swings by Durivage and an error by St. Joseph's gave Springfield the set, 25-21, and the sweep.
Springfield will travel to Elms for a 7:00 pm match on Tuesday, January 28.
