Hughes Anchors Women’s Volleyball to 3-1 NEWMAC Win Over Coast Guard

Springfield, Mass. – October 14, 2025 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over the US Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action inside Blake Arena.

Springfield improved to 18-2 overall and to 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard dropped to 10-6, 2-4. The Pride will head to No. 15 ranked MIT on Saturday in a conference showdown between unbeaten NEWMAC teams at 12:00 pm.

Aubrey Hughes (Liberty Hill, Texas) led Springfield's offensive unit with 12 kills and hit .417 to go along with three aces and six blocks. Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet with 11 kills, four blocks and seven digs, Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) notched nine kills and eight digs and Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) hit .412 with eight kills on 17 swings to go along with a trio of blocks. Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) tallied a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs in addition to four aces, while Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) registered a team-best 17 digs on the night.

Coast Guard scored seven of the first eight points of the match and eventually led by 14 at 20-6 following an ace by Samantha Ventimiglia. Springfield got as close as ten after a block by Avery Chandler (Stoneville, N.C.) and Hughes, but two kills from the Bears gave the visitors the first 25-12.

The score was even at 12 midway through the second, but two straight errors by the Bears gave Springfield a 14-12 edge leading to an eventual 9-3 run for the Pride. Swings by Hughes and Saelua made it 16-13 before Chandler and Saelua made it 22-16. Up 22-17, a final kill by Hughes set up back-to-back aces by Colosimo as the Pride won the second 25-17.

Up 21-20 late in the third, Colosimo dumped the ball over the net once again igniting a set-ending run for the Pride. An error by Coast Guard made the score 23-20 before an ace by Karenna Allain (Woodbridge, Conn.)and a kill by Keaveney gave Springfield the third 25-21.

Abigail Schweitzer swung for Coast Guard's final kill of the night to cut the visitors deficit to two at 17-15 and a kill by Hughes set up an 8-1 match-ending run for the Pride. The run featured two kills by James, two kills by Hughes and a block by Aurissa Boardman (Brooklyn, Conn.) and Hughes before one final Coast Guard error terminated the match.
