Cambridge, Mass. – October 18, 2025 – In a battle of two of the top programs in the region, MIT defeated the Springfield College women's volleyball team, 3-1, by scores of 22-25, 25-6, 25-20, 25-20 on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC action inside Rockwell Cage.
MIT improved to 16-3 overall and to 7-0 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield fell to 18-3, 6-1.
Aubrey Hughes (Liberty Hill, Texas) led Springfield with seven kills and hit .308 on the afternoon, while
Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) registered a team-best 20 digs to go along with six kills.
Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 20 assists and ten digs, while
Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) registered 12 digs and six assists of her own.
In the first set, both teams went on lengthy runs until the score was even at 21. Springfield led 6-2 early on after a kill from
Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) before MIT cut the deficit to one at 13-12.
Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) then ignited a 4-0 spurt for the Pride, but once again the host Engineers answered and eventually knotted the score at 18. Tied at 21, a block and an ace by Colosimo pushed Springfield ahead 23-21 before a kill from Hughes and an MIT error secured the first for Springfield, 25-22.
MIT raced out to a 14-2 lead in the second, hit .484 (15-0-31) and never looked back taking the set 25-6 and tying the match at one.
The Engineers once again produced 15 kills in the third and held the Pride to just a .296 hitting percentage and 12 kills. Eileen Sadati tied the score at 17 which propelled MIT to four straight points and to an eventual 22-19 lead in the set. A pair of Springfield errors paired with a final swing by Ella Zhou gave MIT the third, 25-20 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Springfield was only able to muster seven kills in the fourth as MIT ultimately defeated the Pride 25-20 in the set and 3-1 in the match. The Engineers once again raced out to a big advantage – this time 10-3. A block by Hughes and James and two MIT errors sparked a run for Springfield that saw the Pride pull within one at 12-11, but the Engineers maintained their cushion until the score stood at 22-20. Ali Gibbs recorded a kill and an ace down the stretch with Zhou finishing the match with a final swing off the hands of Adelyn Wyndham for the conference win.
Springfield will look to rebound on Tuesday with a NEWMAC tilt at Mount Holyoke beginning at 7:00 pm.
