Women's Volleyball Escapes With Sweep at Amherst

Amherst, Mass. – October 9, 2025 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up its 14th straight win overall and 15th consecutive against Amherst College in a non-conference sweep over the Mammoths on Thursday evening by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-19.

Springfield improved to 17-2 overall, while Amherst dipped to 5-5 on the year.

Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) once again powered Springfield's offense hitting .563 with nine kills on 16 errorless attempts. Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) chipped in with seven kills and ten digs, while Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) posted five kills to go along with a team-best four aces and a team-best 11 digs. Aubrey Hughes (Liberty Hill, Texas) also added five kills and a trio of aces to Springfield's stat sheet this evening.

Springfield led 4-3 early in the first before a block by Saelua and James ignited a run of seven straight points for the Pride to extend the lead to 11-3. A kill by Saelua and three straight errors by Amherst gave Springfield a 17-6 advantage before the teams traded points until the score read 23-18. A kill by Keaveney and a swing that went long by the Mammoths gave Springfield the first 25-18.

As it did in the first, Springfield jumped out to a big lead in the second – this time 12-4 following kills from Hughes and Keaveney as well as an error by the hosts. Amherst was able to climb back within two at 13-11 and was able to maintain that deficit until late in the set. Another attack error by Amherst paired with a kill from James gave Springfield set point at 24-20. James took one final punch at the ball and sent the Pride to the third up 2-0 after a 25-21 victory in the middle set.

It appeared that Amherst was going to be able to force a fourth set after leading 9-4 early on, but a Springfield run of 6-1 that was powered by kills from Avery Chandler (Stoneville, N.C.), Keaveney and Saelua knotted the score at ten. Amherst held a 17-16 edge midway through until a kill and an ace by James fueled a run of six straight points for the Pride to go ahead 22-17. The run featured a pair of kills by Saelua and two aces from James. Up 22-19, Saelua swung for two kills through the middle and Amherst committed a final error securing the sweep for the Pride.

Springfield will have this weekend off before hosting Coast Guard on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00 pm in Blake Arena.
