Rochester, N.Y. – February 15, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team opened its 2025 campaign on Saturday with a 9-8 setback at Nazareth University.
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) powered Springfield's offense with two goals and two assists for four points, while
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) added two goals of his own in the effort.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 13-for-20 at the face-off X and scooped up a team-best nine ground balls, while in his first collegiate game
Angus Oliviera (Little Compton, R.I.) posted a team-high three caused turnovers.
Riley Owen posted three goals and one assist for four points to lead Nazareth to its first win of the campaign.
Trailing 6-3 early in the third quarter, Springfield produced three consecutive goals to knot the score at six heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) opened the run with an unassisted strike before Burgmyer fed the ball to both Nocito and
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) for the equalizing goals.
Kyle Rosenberger answered and gave the hosts a 7-6 edge just 1:10 into the fourth before
Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, N.Y.) and Burgmyer registered back-to-back unassisted strikes to push Springfield ahead 8-7 still with 12:25 remaining on the clock.
Nazareth converted on turnovers on back-to-back possessions by Springfield as Alex Garrow tallied the equalizer for the hosts before Joey Hathorn took a feed from Rosenberger and buried the shot for what proved to be the game winner.
Springfield had a few good looks down the stretch looking for goals but the Pride's final four shot attempts were all stopped by Nazareth keeper McLean Ralston accounting for the 9-8 final on Saturday in the opener.
In net, Ralston stopped 12 shots for Nazareth, while
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made six saves for the visiting Pride.
Springfield held a 46-22 advantage in shots (20-15 on goal) and went 21-for-25 on the clear including a perfect 13-for-13 in the middle quarters. The Pride also held decisive advantages in both ground balls (36-23) and face-offs (13-8), despite the final score.
Springfield will return to Alden Street for its 2025 home opener on Saturday, February 22 against No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology at 1:00 pm.
