Amherst, Mass. – February 23, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 nationally-ranked Stevens, 13-7, on Sunday afternoon on the campus of UMass Amherst.
Stevens improved to 2-0, while Springfield dipped to 0-2.
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Springfield offensively with his first hat trick of the season in addition to a trio of ground balls, while
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded two goals and
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) added one goal, five ground balls and a caused turnover.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 14-of-22 at the face-off X and scooped up six ground balls. Stevens was led by Tommy Robertozzi, who posted four goals on the day.
In the tightly contested matchup, Stevens held the statistical edge in shots (40-33), while Springfield maintained the edge in ground balls (30-25). Springfield went 21-of-23 on the clear, while the Ducks went 24-of-27 in transition. In net,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made 13 saves for the Pride, while Cooper Foote made 12 stops for Stevens.
Nocito registered the first goal of the game at the 8:53 mark off a feed by
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.),but Stevens ended the opening quarter with three straight goals as Robertozzi scored the equalizer before Connor Gabilanes and Nicolas Accardo gave Stevens a 3-1 edge after 15 minutes of play.
Just as he did in the first, Nocito scored the first goal of the quarter in the second as
Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) picked up his first of three helpers on the day to cut it to a one goal differential. Stevens, however answered with six straight goals – a run that stretched into the early part of the third quarter to take a commanding 9-2 lead.
Berkel found Degnan to ignited a 5-1 run for the Pride that saw
Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) score his first collegiate goal, Carzello tally his first of the campaign, Degnan pot a second goal and Nocito complete the hat trick to cut Springfield's deficit to just three at 10-7 with plenty of time of play.
Stevens put the game out of reach over the final four minutes as Matthew Pergola cut the Springfield run and Robertozzi potted a pair of goals to account for the 13-7 final on Sunday.
Springfield will No. 19 Union on Saturday for a 1:00 pm non-conference tilt in New York.
