Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off Union, 11-10

Schenectady, N.Y. – March 1, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team knocked off No. 20 Union College, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon as the Pride picked up its first win of the 2025 campaign.

Springfield, now 1-2 on the season, earned its first win over Union since the 2018 and its first win over a ranked opponent since 2022, while Union moved to 0-2 on the season falling to the Pride today and Babson a week ago. Union came into the game receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III poll and the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll as well as 20th by Inside Lacrosse.

Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) tied a career-high with six goals for Springfield this afternoon, while Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) added a pair of tallies and Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) notched a trio of helpers and a goal for four points. Defensively, Michael Manning (Glenville, N.Y.) and Anders Norman (Truckee, Calif.) caused three turnovers apiece, while Angus Oliviera (Little Compton, R.I.) and Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) both notched three ground balls apiece for the Pride. Walker Popko led Union with four goals in the setback.

Union held statistical advantages in shots (54-38), ground balls (38-25) and face-off wins (18-5), but Springfield went 22-for-25 on the clear and received 13 saves in net by Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) to secure the 11-10 victory.

After John Sula put Union on the board first, Springfield ripped off four straight goals for a 4-1 advantage late in the opening quarter. Nocito began the run with an unassisted strike before he found Tierney twice in the span of 90 seconds and Degan late in the stanza to cap the spurt. Popko potted his first of the game as the score stood at 4-2 in favor of the Pride through 15 minutes of play.

Popko's goal began a 4-0 run for the hosts which gave Union an eventual 5-4 edge early in the second before Tierney knotted the score at five with his third goal of the day. In the third with the score even at seven, Tierney potted back-to-back goals before Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) found Carzello for the wide open goal to once again give Springfield a three goal advantage this time at 10-7 with 14 minutes remaining.

Springfield's defense had to withstand a late run by Union which featured a goal by Popko, a man-down goal by Archie McEvoy and a strike by Emmett Lyne for the 11-10 final. Union won the face-off down one and called a timeout, but Lyne sailed a shot wide before Peter Kip's attempt was stopped by Quirk giving possession back to the Pride. Despite a turnover by Springfield, the clock hit 0:00 following a successful clear through the midfield giving the Pride its first win over a ranked opponent since 2022.

Springfield will host RV/No. 18 Endicott on Friday night at 7:00 pm.
