Springfield, Mass. – February 22, 2025 – The Springfield College men's volleyball team knocked off third-ranked and previously unbeaten Vassar College in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 on Saturday evening in Blake Arena.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 7 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division III national poll, improved to 11-2, while Vassar, which was ranked third in the same poll, took its first loss of the season and is now 12-1. The win today marked the highest ranked opponent Springfield has beaten since toppling fourth-ranked Stevens in the NCAA semifinals at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign.
Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offense with 12 kills as he hit .550 on the night.
Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) recorded five kills to go along with four digs and a block, while
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) dished out 26 assists and recorded three kills of his own and
Ricardo Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) registered a match-best ten digs. Tobias Clark led Vassar with six kills in the setback.
Springfield scored the first four points of the opening set on back-to-back aces from
Giancarlo Carrion (San Juan, Puerto Rico), an error by Vassar and a swing by Durivage. Up by just three midway through the set at 15-12, the Pride embarked on a 5-2 spurt that featured two kills from DesLauriers and two blocks from
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) to push the Pride's lead to six at 19-13. After trading points, a kill from Durivage paired with a service error by the visitors, secured the first set for Springfield, 25-20.
Tied at five in the second, Springfield's 6-2 run that featured a kill from
AJ Seveland (Jenkintown, Pa.), a solo block in the middle by Rouleau and a kill from Mulvaney gave the Pride an 11-7 edge. Back-to-back assisted blocks by
Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) and
Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) late in the stanza extended Springfield's lead to eight at 22-14 before swings by the duo and another service error by Vassar gave the Pride the second, 25-17.
Vassar fought back from a 15-12 deficit midway through the third and scored five straight points – a run that was capped on a kill from Tobias – to take an 18-16 edge. After trading points, a 6-2 run that saw Rouleau and Durivage produce kills and
Will Kirchhoff (Macedon, N.Y.) cap the run with an ace ultimately gave Springfield the lead back at 23-21. A service error by Vassar and a swing by Durivage off a feed by Mulvaney gave Springfield the set 25-23 and the sweep tonight.
Springfield will host Elms College in Dana Gymnasium on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
