Springfield, Mass. – February 26, 2025 – For the second time this season, the Springfield College men's volleyball team defeated Elms College in straight sets as the Pride won by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 on Wednesday evening in Dana Gymnasium.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 4 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division III national poll, improved to 12-2, while Elms dropped to 3-10.
AJ Seveland (Jenkintown, Pa.) powered Springfield's offense with eight kills on 12 kills as he hit .583 on the night, while
Joey Preische (Penfield, N.Y.) chipped in with five kills and
Richard Eber Jr. (Hummelstown, Pa.) added five kills, five aces and five digs.
Dyllan Nguyen (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) combined for 31 assists in the sweep. Elms was paced by Nicholas Uschmann who tallied ten kills on 20 swings, despite eight errors.
Springfield scored seven of the first points of the match as a kill by
Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) and an ace from
Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) capped the spurt.
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit a team-best .800 with four kills on five swings in the first set as a block by Rouleau and Durivage forced Elms to burn its first timeout down 13-6 before a swing by
Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) made it 18-11 late in the stanza. Rouleau pounded the ball through the middle to win the first 25-15.
Springfield needed just eight kills, used seven aces and took advantage of five attacking errors as well as five service errors to win the middle set, 25-16. Down 6-3, Springfield ripped of eight straight points with Eber Jr. serving for an 11-6 edge. Eber Jr. registered three aces and Preische registered a kill over the stretch. Elms got as close as two points at 14-12, but an 11-4 run ended the set. Swings by Seveland and Eber Jr. as well as a pair of aces from Eber Jr. highlighted the set ending run.
Seveland hit .500 with five kills in the third en route to the sweep as Springfield matched its .423 hitting percentage from the first set, but used 16 kills in the third for the win. Up by just two at 14-12 midway through a quick 5-2 spurt highlighted by kills from Seveland and Eber Jr, gave Springfield the distance it needed to win. Both teams traded points down the stretch before one final swing from Eber Jr. sealed the sweep for the Pride.
Springfield will travel to third-ranked Stevens on Saturday for its next match.
