Women's Lacrosse Blanks Western New England in Season Opener

Springfield, Mass. – February 23, 2025 – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team opened its 2025 season with a dominant 15-0 shutout win over Western New England University on Sunday afternoon.

Springfield, which is now 1-0 on the season, earned its first shutout win since April 20, 2022 when the Pride blanked Wellesley, 24-0. Springfield picked up its first shutout over a non-conference opponent since March 20, 1997 in the opener against Clarkson in Panama City, Florida. Western New England, meanwhile, opens its year at 0-1.

Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.)Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) all recorded hat tricks for Springfield, while Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) tallied a goal and three helpers to post a team-best four points in addition to leading Springfield with five draw controls. Andresen and Liz Neri (Farmington, Conn.) paced the Pride with three ground balls. In net, Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) made a stellar debut for the Pride stopping all eight shots she faced.

Springfield scored seven goals in the opening quarter and never looked back. Newton put the Pride on the board less than a minute into the contest off a feed from Johnson before a pair of man-up goals from Andresen and Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) made it a 3-0 lead. Newton and Vey both recorded two goals apiece over the final 4:22 of the first to account for the 7-0 score.

Vey, Johnson and Andresen all scored for the Pride in the second quarter for a 10-0 advantage at the break. In the third, Springfield potted back-to-back man-up goals from Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Andresen before Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) capped the scoring on an unassisted strike before the buzzer sounded. Claire Ognibene (New Caanan, Conn.) and Molly Forrest (Wakefield, Mass.) both registered their first collegiate goals in the fourth for the Pride to account for the 15-0 final.

As a team, Springfield held a 36-16 advantage in shots, a 22-19 edge in ground balls, a 10-8 differential in draw controls and went 19-for-24 on the clear.

Springfield will travel to Skidmore on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at 4:00 pm.
