Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team scored eight goals in the fourth quarter to rally for a 13-11 non-conference win over Skidmore College on Wednesday evening at Wachenheim Field.
Springfield improved to 2-0, while Skidmore dipped to 0-2. This marked Springfield's second consecutive win over the Thoroughbreds as the Pride topped Skidmore, 16-12, at home a season ago.
Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.),
Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.),
Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and
Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) all recorded hat tricks for Springfield in the win. Newton led the Pride in both points with four as she added an assist as well as draw controls with seven. Lily Schwartzman and Julia Cafasso combined for eight of Skidmore's 11 goals in the setback.
Statistically, Skidmore held the edge in both shots (34-28) and ground balls (15-11), but Springfield was strong on the draw winning 17 of 26 attempts in the win. Springfield also converted twice on free-position and held Skidmore without a free-position goal. The Pride went 15-for-17 on the clear.
The two sides traded goals in the first period, but Springfield scored twice on the man-advantage. Newton tallied the first goal of the game off a feed from
Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) before
Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) found Lalancette for Springfield's third goal of the frame as the score stood even through 15 minutes of play.
Schwartzman scored four times for Skidmore in the second quarter – three of which came off passes from Phoebe Ross for a 7-5 edge at the break. The hosts scored the lone goal of the third on an unassisted strike before Springfield's ferocious comeback began.
Newton registered back-to-back unassisted strikes to open the fourth before Johnson knotted the game at nine with 9:53 to play. Andresen's fifth marker of the season gave Springfield a 10-9 lead before Lalancette gave the Pride the cushion needed to secure the win. A pair of strikes from Lalancette and Andresen with under three minutes to play gave Springfield the 13-11 come from behind win.
In net, both
Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.), who improved to 2-0 and Isabella Iannonne, who fell to 0-2, made ten saves apiece.
Springfield will host Endicott College on Saturday at 3:00 pm on Stagg Field in its first home game of the season.
