Men's Lacrosse Drops 11-5 Decision at No. 10 Amherst

Amherst, Mass. – March 11, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 nationally-ranked Amherst College, 11-5, on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Pratt Field. 

Amherst moved to 3-0, while Springfield fell to 1-4.

Five different student-athletes recorded a goal for Springfield tonight, while Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) led the way with four ground balls for the visitors. Bob Gross guided Amherst with a trio of scores in the win.

After a slow start from both teams, Amherst scored the first goals of the game at the 10:52 mark when Devon Christian buried the shot off a pass from Ben Wick. Wick then made it 2-0 with under two minutes to play in the first and then the Mammoths took a 3-0 advantage after 14 minutes to play when Matthew Sheinberg notched his third tally of the year.

Bob Gross registered back-to-back goals for the hosts before Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished a pass from Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) for Springfield's first goal of the game with 10:07 remaining in the half. Amherst scored four times which included a goal from Wick on the man-advantage as the hosts led 9-1 at the break.

Springfield scored four times over the final ten minutes of the game to account for the 11-5 final. Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished a pass from Soldo before Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.)Nick Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) and Ryan McDonald (Carmel, N.Y.) all found the back of the cage for the Pride.

Amherst held advantages in shots (43-28), ground balls (34-23) and face-offs (16-3). Springfield went 19-for-22 on the clear, while the Mammoths went 24-for-26 in transition.

In net, Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made a season-high 17 saves for Springfield.
Springfield will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at home against No. 20 Babson College beginning at 3:00 pm on Stagg Field.
