Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off No. 15/20 Babson, 9-6, in NEWMAC Opener

Springfield, Mass. – March 15, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team held nationally-ranked Babson College to its lowest offensive output in three seasons as the Pride topped the Beavers, 9-6, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon.

Springfield improved to 2-4 overall and to 1-0 in NEWMAC play, while Babson, which came into today's game ranked No. 15/20 dropped to 4-2, 0-1. The Pride also defeated the Beavers for the first time since April 2, 2022 and for just the third time since the 2018 campaign. Babson entered the game riding a 17-game winning streak in NEWMAC contests – a streak that stretched back April 30, 2022 at MIT.

Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) led Springfield offensively with two goals and an assist, while Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) chipped in with two goals of his own. Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.)Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.)Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.)Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) and Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) all tallied one goal apiece for the Pride as well. Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 11-for-18 at the face-off X and scooped up five ground balls. In net, Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made ten saves for Springfield.

In a game that was pretty even statistically, Babson held an edge in shots (33-27) and ground balls (24-18). Springfield went a perfect 22-for-22 on the clear and scored twice on the man-advantage.

Springfield trailed 3-1 midway through the first before a strike by Degnan on the man-advantage off a feed from Burgmyer and a goal from Tierney as time expired in the first knotted the score at three after 15 minutes of play.

Carzello put Springfield ahead early in the second before Bennett Smith buried a goal for Babson on the power play to tie the game at four. The Pride answered with four consecutive goals – a run that started and ended with goals from Scanlon – put Springfield ahead 8-4 at the break.

Camden Matthews opened the scoring for Babson in the third before Tierney put Springfield back ahead by four less than a minute later. Matthews scored the final goal of the game with 8:38 left in the third to account for the 9-6 final.

Springfield will host Emerson College next Saturday at 4:00 pm.
