Men's Lacrosse Downs NEWMAC Foe Emerson on Saturday

Springfield, Mass. – March 22, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team picked up a 20-6 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Emerson College on Saturday afternoon on Stagg Field.

Springfield, which entered today's game receiving votes in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Division III national poll, improved to 3-4 overall and to 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while Emerson fell to 2-7, 0-2.

Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offensive unit with four goals and an assist for five points, while Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) registered his first collegiate hat trick for the Pride. Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.)Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.), and Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) all recorded multi-goal games for Springfield with Burgmyer adding two assists to his line to complete his day with four points. 

Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) won 11-of-14 face-offs at the X, while Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) secured nine face-off victories giving Springfield wins on 20-of-30 attempts. Savastano also led the Pride with nine ground balls. Defensively, Toby Oliveira (Little Compton, R.I.)registered a pair of caused turnovers as he accounted for two of nine CT's on the day for the Pride.

As a team, Springfield held advantages in shots (55-22) and ground balls (33-15) and went 20-for-23 on the clear. In net, starter Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made two saves in 38 minutes to earn his third win of the season.

Emerson jumped out to a 2-1 edge just 38 seconds into the game on goals from Alex Menendez and Aedan Kiniry, but Springfield responded with 12 consecutive goals for a 13-2 advantage at halftime. Berkel knotted the score at two before Degnan gave Springfield a lead it wouldn't relinquish with an unassisted strike with 8:19 to play in the first. Before the first was up, Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) fed the ball to Burgmyer for a man-down goal before taking a 7-2 lead into the break.

Springfield outscored Emerson, 9-0, in the middle two quarters ballooning the lead to as many as 15 at 18-3 following Charlie Vath's (Southington, Conn.) first collegiate goal. Emerson got a trio of goals back late in the fourth before Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, N.Y.) and Stensrud capped the scoring in the 20-6 final.

Berkel, Sal Posillico (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Vath all registered their first collegiate goals for the Pride this afternoon.

Springfield will travel to No. 14 Middlebury College on Tuesday for a non-conference clash at 4:00 pm.
