Springfield, Mass. – March 23, 2025 - The Springfield College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Westfield State University on Sunday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.
Springfield moved its record to 3-11, while Westfield State is now 10-3 on the season.
Game One: Westfield 3, Springfield 2
The top three hitters in Springfield's lineup in
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.),
Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) and
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) combined for three of the team's four hits and both RBI's in game one.
Westfield put together single runs in the top of the first, third and fifth innings off Springfield starter
Josh Mayo (Westfield, Mass.).
Springfield got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on an infield single by
Ryan Duffy (Stafford Springs, Conn.). Garafalo drove in Dunaisky with a single to center before Lepere plated Duffy on a sacrifice fly.
Westfield State's bullpen arms of Charlie Walsh and Michael Hall allowed just one hit over the final two innings as Hall earned his fourth save of the season for the Owls.
Game Two: Springfield 6, Westfield 5
Westfield put together three runs in the top of the first inning, but Springfield immediately answered with a three spot of its own in the bottom of the opening frame. Lepere began with a double to right, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lloyd. With runners on first and second, Dunaisky knocked in Garafalo with a double to center before another sacrifice fly from
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) tied the score at three.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the fourth,
Aiden Palen (East Hampton, Conn.) came across to score the go ahead run on a fielder's choice. A leadoff homer in the fifth from Garafalo and a sacrifice fly from
Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) put Springfield ahead 6-3 and despite allowing a pair of runs in the top of the sixth,
Ethan Gray (Lincoln, R.I.) earned the save as he allowed just two hits and a walk over the final 1.2 innings for the Pride.
JP Catellier (Springfield, Mass.) earned the win (2-1) going the first five innings allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out four.
Springfield will travel to Salve Regina University on Tuesday at 3:00 pm to open NEWMAC play.
