Cambridge, Mass. – March 29, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play as the Pride picked up a 15-13 win on the road at MIT this afternoon.
Springfield, which was receiving votes in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III National Poll, improved to 4-5 overall and to 3-0 in NEWMAC play, while MIT dropped to 3-6, 1-2.
Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offense with four goals and an assist for five points, while
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) also contributed five points on two goals and three helpers. Both
Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded hat tricks for the Pride as well. Defensively,
Angus Oliveira (Little Compton, R.I.) registered a team-best three caused turnovers to go along with six ground balls, while
Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) went 13-for-26 at the faceoff X and scooped eight ground balls.
Statistically, MIT held advantages in shots (46-31), ground balls (39-35) and faceoffs (16-14) and also scored twice on the man-advantage. Springfield went 18-for-22 on the clear. In net for Springfield,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) picked up the win with nine saves.
Degnan and Scanlon ripped back-to-back goals for Springfield for an early 2-1 edge before Webb and Scanlon registered unassisted strike to push Springfield ahead 4-2 midway through the second. But before halftime and ahead by just one at 4-3, Burgmyer, Webb and Degnan gave Springfield a four goal advantage, 7-3, at the break.
Both teams traded goals to open the third before Springfield took its largest lead of the game at seven goals, 11-4, following a
Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) goal off a feed from Burgmyer. MIT climbed back within four at 12-8 early in the fourth with three straight strikes including a goal from Nick Stiles on the man-advantage.
Springfield would go back ahead by seven following goals from Webb, Scanlon and Degnan before MIT would attempt a bid at the comeback. Stiles began the run for the homestanding Engineers and MIT scored five straight times to make it just a two goal differential at 15-13 when time expired. Stiles scored six times for MIT including three times on that final push over the last 4:54 of the contest.
Springfield will travel down the street for a rivalry game at Western New England on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
