Springfield, Mass. – April 1, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter surge from Western New England University to defeat the Golden Bears 9-7 in a non-conference crosstown rivalry game on Tuesday evening at Golden Bear Stadium.
Springfield improved its record to 5-5, while Western New England fell to 5-6.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Springfield with a four goal performance tonight, while
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) posted a team-best five points with two goals and three assists in the win for the Pride.
Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) added a pair of goals and two ground balls to his stat line.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and
Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scooped up a team-high seven ground balls, while Scialdone went 10-for-17 at the face-off X this evening.
Rafe Lawless (North Haven, Conn.) led the Pride with a trio of caused turnovers.
In net,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made seven saves for the Pride. As a team, Springfield held statistical advantages in shots (39-23) and ground balls (35-24) and went 20-for-21 on the clear.
Degan scored the game's opening goal just 1:41 into the contest for the early edge before the teams traded goals as midway through the first Springfield held a 2-1 lead. Soldo extended Springfield's lead to two as he finished as pass from
Ryan Berkel before Degnan and Soldo connected for a 4-2 advantage through 15 minutes of play.
Then, 20 seconds into the second, Degnan registered his third goal of the game off a feed from
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) on the man-advantage before Soldo, Degnan and Scanlon extended Springfield's lead to four at halftime, 8-4.
Neither team scored in the third, but Lane finished a pass from
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) to push the game to a five goal differential early in the fourth. Western New England answered on the man-advantage shortly after Lane's tally and then scored twice more before time expired. The hosts called a timeout down two with 30 seconds to play, but a forced turnover by
Michael Manning (Glenville, N.Y.) secured the 9-7 victory for the Pride.
Springfield will return to NEWMAC play on Saturday with a trip to Clark University at 7:00 pm.
