Worcester, Mass. – April 6, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team earned its fourth league win on Saturday night on the road as the Pride topped Clark University, 17-5, on Granger Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Springfield is now 6-5 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play, while Clark's record dropped to 6-5, 0-4. In this week's USILA Division III National Poll, Springfield continued to receive votes among ten other programs just outside the top-20 in the country.
Six different student-athletes from Springfield recorded two goals apiece in the win.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Springfield with five points as he tallied two goals and three assists, while
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) notched two goals and two assists for four points. Defensively,
Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) and
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) led Springfield with three caused turnovers apiece. Whitney and Carzello notched four and three ground balls, respectively, as well.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won nine face-offs and paced Springfield with five ground balls.
In net,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made ten saves over the first 52 minutes of play for Springfield before
Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) came on in relief and made four stops over the final eight minutes of the game.
As a team, Springfield led statistically in shots (46-29), while Clark held advantages in ground balls (33-30) and face-offs (14-12). Springfield went 24-for-25 on the clear.
Springfield scored just twice in the first quarter as Degnan found Soldo for the game's opening goal before
Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) notched an unassisted strike with 1:44 remaining in the first.
Zach Barden (Swampscott, Mass.) tallied the first goal of the second for the Pride as Springfield took a 3-0 edge before adding four additional goals to lead 7-2 at the halftime break.
Degnan found
Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) midway through the second before
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) notched an unassisted goal 20 seconds later.
Charlie Vath (Southington, Conn.), who recorded a career-best two goals in the win for the Pride, capped the scoring before the halftime buzzer sounded.
Springfield went on to outscore Clark by a 10-3 differential in the second half en route to the 17-5 final.
Springfield will host Coast Guard on Saturday, April 12 for its senior day contest on Stagg Field at 1:00 pm.
