Springfield, Mass. – April 12, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team outscored Coast Guard 10-2 in the first half en route to a 12-5 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Bears on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Springfield remained unbeaten in conference play and is now atop the NEWMAC standings alone at 5-0 (7-5 overall), while Coast Guard fell to 7-4, 2-3. These two teams came into today's game ranked in the first NCAA Power Index as Springfield is 46th and Coast Guard is 55th.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the way for Springfield with three goals and three assists for six points, while
Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) added two goals and one assist for three points.
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.),
Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) and
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) all chipped in with two goals apiece as well.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was dominant on the face-off going 13-for-19,
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) led the Pride with five ground balls, while
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) and
Angus Oliveira (Little Compton, R.I.) posted two caused turnovers.
Quirk made 13 saves for Springfield, the sixth time in 12 games the senior keeper has reached that mark.
As a team, Springfield held a 42-38 edge in shots and a 26-22 differential in ground balls. The Pride also went 23-for-25 on the clear and 1-for-2 on the man-advantage.
Mason Laforte put Coast Guard ahead just 55 seconds into the game before Springfield ripped off six straight goals for a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. Scanlon finished a pass from Degnan to knot the score at one before
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) dished out his first of five assists on the day to Soldo on the man-advantage giving Springfield a lead it would not relinquish. All five of Tierney's assists came over the first 20 minutes of today's game.
Webb scored twice in between strikes from Scanlon and Degnan to round out the first quarter. As they did in the first, Coast Guard struck for the opening goal in the second before Springfield recorded four straight as Degnan, Burgmyer and Soldo gave the Pride a 10-2 halftime lead.
Both teams combined for just five goals in the second half as Springfield went on to win its fourth straight, 12-5, over Coast Guard this afternoon.
Springfield will host No. 7 Wesleyan University in non-conference action on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
