Springfield, Mass. – April 11, 2025 – Despite jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, the Springfield College baseball team fell to MIT, 15-7, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday afternoon on Archie Allen Field.
MIT improved to 10-12 overall and to 5-2 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield fell to 7-15, 1-4.
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a team-best three RBI for Springfield, while
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk and
Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with three runs and three walks.
Balchius quickly unloaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run triple to left before he scored on a base knock by Dunaisky for the early 4-0 edge. MIT, however, answered with six runs in the third highlighted by a three-run homer by Reed Tubbs and a two-run single by John Spivey, the defending national Rookie of the Week.
An error in the third and a wild pitch in the fourth allowed single runs to score for Springfield, but leading 8-6 after seven frames, MIT exploded for another six spot in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
A sacrifice fly with the bases loaded accounted for MIT's first run of the eighth before four RBI knocks quickly made it 14-6.
Phillip Hood earned the win for MIT pitching 2.2 innings out of the pen before Cole Foster earned a four inning save for the visitors after coming in to the game with the Engineers up just 8-6. Foster struck out five and allowed just one hit and one run facing the final 17 batters of the game.
Springfield is scheduled to travel to Emerson for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Sunday.
