Softball Takes Two Wins Over WPI in Friday Afternoon NEWMAC Doubleheader

Springfield, Mass. – April 11, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team exploded for 25 combined runs in a two game sweep over WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) twin bill on Friday afternoon at Potter Field. Springfield won both five-inning run rule games by 14-6 and 11-1 scores.

Springfield is now 14-8 overall and 5-3 in NEWMAC play, while WPI dropped its record to 11-9, 2-4.

Game One: Springfield 14, WPI 6 (5 Inn.)

Springfield produced 14 runs and 14 hits in the game one win and saw four student-athletes register multi-hit games. Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI, Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with three RBI and a walk. At the top of the lineup, Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) combined to score five of Springfield's 14 runs.

DeRosa picked up her fifth win of the season as she tossed a complete game and struck out five.

Springfield trailed 2-1 through an inning and a half before the Pride exploded for seven runs in the second and five in the third to go ahead by a 13-2 margin. A fielder's choice RBI from DeRosa knotted the score at two before a bases loaded walk by Pecchia gave Springfield the lead for good. Gendron and Puskas both ripped RBI singles before a groundout by Ponticello ended the scoring in the second.

Puskas lifted her fourth round tripper of the season with Gendron and Maddie Tse (Glenville, N.Y.) on the bases to make it 13-2.

WPI was able to muster just one run in the fourth and held off a run-rule loss in the top of the fifth with a three spot to force Springfield to come to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Gendron drilled the ball to center and looked like it was going to leave the yard as a walk-off homer, but WPI centerfielder made a web gem leaping catch at the wall to deny Gendron and the Pride the win.

With two outs, Manzone singled to right center and took second as Puskas was hit by the pitch. Ponticello then drilled the ball to third base where Destiny Lum made a diving stop, but Manzone came across to score the game-winning run.

Game Two: Springfield 11, WPI 1 (5 Inn.)

In the nightcap, Gendron led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort that featured a double and a home run to go along with four RBI, while Pecchia went 2-for-3 with three RBI and DeRosa went 2-for-2 with two RBI. At the bottom of the lineup, Ponticello, Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) and Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored six of Springfield's 11 runs.

Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, Conn.) picked up her third straight win and complete game effort as she struck out seven, scattered four hits and allowed just one run pushing her record in the circle to 3-0.

After a scoreless first, Springfield's bats came alive in the second with six runs in the second and five more in the third to account for the 11-1 final. A sac fly from DeRosa plated Springfield's first run after Ponticello reached on a walk. Pecchia then brought home Seyfert and Katsetos on a two-run single to center.

Gendron then blasted her fourth homer of the season – a three-run round tripper – to make it 6-0. Gendron and Puskas are now tied for second in the NEWMAC with four home runs this season, while Gendron and Puskas rank third and fourth, respectively, in RBI this year.

A two-run single by DeRosa made it 8-0 in the third before Pecchia and Gendron roped RBI hits for the 11-1 final. McCauliffe allowed just one runner to reach third base in game two.

Springfield is slated to host MIT on Sunday in a NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
