Softball Run Rules MIT In Nightcap to Secure NEWMAC Split With Engineers

Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2025 – After falling in game one 7-0, the Springfield College softball team earned an 11-3 run rule six inning win in the nightcap to split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against MIT on Sunday afternoon at Potter Field.

Springfield, which earned its first home win against the Engineers since the 2017 season, moved its record to 15-9 overall and to 6-4 in conference play, while MIT pushed its record to 14-6, 5-3.

Game One: MIT 7, Springfield 0

MIT starter Caroline Langmeyer (8-1) held Springfield to just four hits over seven innings and the Engineers offense exploded for six runs over the final two innings to secure the game one win. Leading 1-0 after five frames, three straight singles in the sixth loaded the bases an RBI knock from Maggie Feng and an RBI groundout from Delaney Benevides made it 3-0 in favor of the Engineers.

Then, in the top of the seventh Mackenzie Bivin and Olivia Scarpaci both launched two run home runs for a four spot in the inning and a 7-0 advantage. Springfield was able to put a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh, but Langmeyer retired the side to end the game.

Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.)Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.)Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) and Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) all recorded one hit each for Springfield in the opener.

Game Two: Springfield 11, MIT 3 (6 Innings)

DeRosa powered Springfield's offense from the top of the lineup as she went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI, while Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI of her own. Manzone and Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) combined for three hits and two RBI and Gendron was credited with Springfield's other RBI in the win.

After a scoreless first, Springfield's bats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second. After three walks, Springfield earned its first run of the day on an error, before DeRosa cleared the bases with a three-run triple to the gap. In the next at-bat, DeRosa scored on a wild pitch making it 5-0.

MIT took advantage of three Springfield errors in the third and put together a pair of runs before an RBI single by Benevides in the top of the fourth made it a two run game, 5-3. Springfield answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the same inning as DeRosa came across to score on an RBI single by Gendron before an infield single by Manzone made it 7-3 and a fielder's choice by Puskas made it 8-3. Pecchia then stepped to the plate in the fifth with the bases loaded and drilled a two-run single down the left field like for two additional runs.

After a pair of shutdown innings in the circle by Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, Conn.), Puskas began the sixth with a single to right. She moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out and scored the game winning run on an infield knock by DeRosa to secure the split.

Julia Rimshnick (Staten Island, N.Y.) and McCauliffe scattered just five hits and struck out five batters as all three MIT runs were unearned.

Springfield will travel to Amherst for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
