Johnson Powers Women's Lacrosse Past Wellesley, 19-5

Wellesley, Mass. – April 12, 2025 – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team outscored Wellesley College, 8-1, in the first en route to a dominant 19-5 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Saturday afternoon at Butler Stadium.

Springfield, now winners of nine straight and ranked 22nd in the first NCAA Power Index rankings, improved to 12-1 overall and to 7-0 in conference play, while Wellesley dropped to 1-11, 0-7.

Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offense with four goals and one assist for five points, while Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.)Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.)Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.)Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) and Payton Imhof (Bay Shore, N.Y.) all recorded two goals apiece. Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) led the Pride with seven draw controls, while Taylor, Ognibene and Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) all scooped up three ground balls. Hibbert, Johnson, Gaydos and Andresen all posted a team-best two caused turnovers. In net, Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) made two saves on the three shots she faced in the first half.

As a team, Springfield held advantages in shots (44-13), ground balls (29-18) and draw controls (21-6) in addition to going 12-for-15 on the clear and 4-for-5 on free position shots.

Johnson put Springfield on the board just 30 seconds into the game before Vey and Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) quickly followed with unassisted strikes to make it 3-0 less than five minutes in. Before the end of the quarter, Liz Neri (Farmington, Conn.) registered a goal on the man-advantage extending Springfield's lead to 8-1 through 15 minutes of play. Five different student-athletes for Springfield found the back of the net in the second quarter as the Pride took a 13-1 lead at the break.

Wellesley opened the scoring in the third with a goal playing a man down and outscored Springfield 3-1 in the period, but Springfield's offense ramped back up in the fourth with five additional goals to account for the 19-5 final.

Springfield will next travel to MIT on Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm.
