Cambridge, Mass. – April 16, 2025 – MIT used a big second quarter to defeat the Springfield College women's lacrosse team, 13-11, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Wednesday evening at Jack Barry Field.
MIT improved to 8-7 overall and to 7-1 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield suffered just its second loss of the season and is now 12-2, 7-1. Springfield entered the game ranked 19th in the latest NCAA Power Index.
Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) led Springfield with four goals, while
Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) added three goals of her own.
Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and
Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) both scored twice accounting for Springfield's 11 goals on the night. Defensively,
Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) caused three turnovers and scooped up a trio of ground balls, while in net
Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) made 11 stops for the Pride. Julianne Flusche powered MIT with four goals on the night.
MIT held a slight 29-27 edge in shots and won 17-of-28 draw controls. Both teams scooped up 18 ground balls on the night, while Springfield went 14-for-18 on the clear.
Gwen Flusche put MIT on the board early in the first before back-to-back strikes from Lalancette gave Springfield its first lead of the game. The teams traded goals as the score stood even at five before back-to-back goals by MIT including one on a mishandled pass from Springfield gave the homestanding Engineers a 7-5 lead – a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Springfield was able to cut its deficit to one on two different occasions – once before halftime when
Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) fed the ball to Andresen to make it 7-6 and once early in the fourth when Johnson finished a pass from
Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) to make it 11-10. MIT, however, answered with three straight goals following Andresen's strike and two following Johnson's goal to secure the win.
Springfield trailed 11-7 midway through the third when Vey tallied back-to-back goals before Johnson's goal early in the fourth, but J. Flusche put the game away with two goals of her own in the fourth quarter for the Engineers.
Springfield will travel to No. 14/16 Babson College on Saturday for a NEWMAC showdown at 12:30 pm.
