Women's Lacrosse Rally Falls Short in 16-11 NEWMAC Setback at No. 14/16 Babson

Babson Park, Mass. – April 19, 2025 – A fourth quarter rally wasn't enough for the Springfield College women's lacrosse team as the Pride fell to No. 14/16 Babson College, 16-11, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on MacDowell Field this afternoon.

Babson improved to 12-2 overall and remained unbeaten in NEWMAC play at 9-0, while Springfield, which took its second consecutive conference loss fell to 12-3, 7-2 and is in line for the third seed in next weekend's NEWMAC tournament. 

Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) led Springfield with six points on the day featuring four goals and two assists to go along with four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) had another great day tying her career-best with four goals as well. Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) recorded a team-best six draw controls, while in addition to Johnson, Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.)Kyana Alvarado (Westfield, Mass.) and Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) tallied three ground balls apiece. 

As a team, Babson held a 41-33 differential in shots, while Springfield held the advantages in ground balls (21-19), draw controls (16-15) and buried five of its nine free position shots. The Pride also went 12-for-14 on the clear. Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) made nine saves for Springfield over the first 55 minutes of play this afternoon.

Babson jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the opening five minutes of play before Johnson struck for Springfield's initial goal late in the stanza. Before the first was over, Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) buried a goal, but the Pride still trailed the Beavers, 4-2. Over the middle two quarters, Babson outscored Springfield by an 11-3 margin including 8-2 in the third to take a 15-5 lead through 45 minutes of play.

After Kathryn Blake scored for Babson on the man-advantage early in the fourth, Johnson and Ognibene combined for Springfield's next five goals including one on the man-advantage and one playing a man-down. Lalancette added a goal on the power play with less than ten seconds remaining in regulation, but it wasn't enough as Babson held off Springfield for the 16-11 win.

Springfield will wrap up the regular season against Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday at 6:00 pm on Stagg Field.
