No. 4 Men's Volleyball Advances to National Quarterfinals With Five Set Win Over No. 20 Mount Union

Kenosha, Wis. – April 18, 2025 – The fourth-ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team grinded out a five set win over No. 20 Mount Union in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday evening in Tarble Arena on the campus of Carthage College. Springfield won by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12.

Springfield, ranked No. 4 in the latest AVCA Division III National Poll, improved to 23-4 and will take on the winner of Aurora/Carthage in the national quarterfinals tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm local time. Mount Union sees its season come to a close at 20-9.

The win today marked the first postseason victory for Springfield since the 2022 campaign after falling in five sets to both Southern Virginia in 2023 and Juniata in 2024. Springfield will be making its tenth appearance in the NCAA national quarterfinals and will fight for a spot in the semifinal round which is slated to take place next weekend in Salem, Virginia at the Cregger Center.

After today's victory over No. 20 Mount Union, Springfield has a record of 5-2 against top-20 teams this season including No. 2 Southern Virginia, No. 3 Stevens, No. 3 Vassar and No. 20 MIT.

Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offensive unit with 18 kills tying a career-high for the junior outside. Earlier this season, Durivage also had 18 kills against both Rivier and St. Joseph's Long Island. Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) registered 12 kills and hit .444, while Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) added ten kills tonight for the Pride. DesLauriers completed the double-double with 17 digs, while Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) dished out 57 assists and had seven digs of his own.

As a team. Springfield recorded a season-best 66 kills, a season-best 62 assists and a season-best 50 digs in its first five set match of the 2025 season.

After winning the opening stanza 25-18, Springfield's season was on the line as Mount Union won set two 25-22 and set three 25-23.

A service error by Mount Union and kills from both Rouleau and Durivage gave Springfield an early edge in the fourth before a 6-1 run that featured two kills from Durivage, one kill from Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) and an ace by Giancarlo Carrion (San Juan, Puerto Rico) extended the Pride's lead to 15-8. Up 21-12 following a swing by Levinson, two errors put Springfield within two with its season on the line. Will Kirchhoff (Macedon, N.Y.) and Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) recorded kills off the hands of Mulvaney to ease by Mount Union, 25-15, in the fourth.

Two errors from Mount Union opened the fifth before kills by Durivage, Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.), DesLauriers and Rouleau as well as an ace by Levinson made it 7-4. Another swing by Rouleau forced the switchover at 8-5. Springfield then pushed its lead to four off a big block in the middle by Rouleau and Durivage and an error from Mount Union made it 10-5. The Purple Raiders were able to get as close as three but one final kill from Levinson terminated the set at 15-12 and the match in favor of Springfield, 3-2.

This marked the first meeting between Springfield and Mount Union. Should Springfield face Carthage tomorrow, the Pride have a record of 4-1 against the Firebirds, but should Springfield face Aurora tomorrow, it will be another uncommon opponent for the Pride never having faced the Spartans.
