Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Salve Regina, 10-8, in the Fourth Quarter

Newport, RI – April 19, 2025 – Tied at eight in the fourth quarter, goals by Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) lifted the Springfield College men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Salve Regina University on the road this afternoon.

Springfield, which clinched at least a share of the 2025 NEWMAC regular season title for the first time since the 2018 campaign, improved to 8-6 overall and to 6-0 in conference play, while Salve Regina dropped to 11-4, 4-2. A win next weekend at Wheaton would secure Springfield's first undefeated conference slate since 2016 when the Pride went 7-0 and won the NEWMAC title.

Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded his sixth hat trick of the season and fourth in six conference games with a trio of goals this afternoon. Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Burgmyer chipped in with two goals apiece, while Tierney ended the day with three points on one goal and two helpers. Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded a team-best five ground balls, while Lane, Tierney and Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) notched two caused turnovers apiece.

Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, NY) went 9-for-22 at the face off dot and Kaiden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made seven stops for Springfield between the pipes. As a team, Springfield held a 33-26 edge in shots and went a perfect 25-for-25 on the clear. Salve Regina took an 18-16 edge in ground balls and a 13-9 differential in face-offs. Both squads went 1-for-2 on the man-advantage.

Springfield raced out to a 5-0 lead through the first 12 minutes of play as Degnan buried the game's initial goal before Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) fired in an unassisted strike two minutes later. Matt Webb (Northport, NY) fed the ball to both Degnan and Charlie Vath (Southington, Conn.) to make it 4-0 before Scanlon pushed Springfield's lead to five with 3:02 remaining in the first.

Salve Regina's offense woke up and scored seven straight goals – a run that lasted early into the third quarter as Chris Koltzan and Liam Cooney both scored twice for the Seahawks which featured a goal on the man-advantage.

Scanlon finally broke the scoring drought for Springfield as he and Tierney connected on the power play before Degnan knotted the score at seventh early in the third. The teams traded goals until there was 10:17 remaining in regulation and the score even at eight. Webb fed the ball to Tierney to give Springfield a 9-8 edge before Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) and Burgmyer connected playing a man-down with 4:34 left on the clock to give Springfield the lead it needed to hold on for the win.

Angus Oliveira (Little Compton, RI) forced a turnover out of the ensuing face off and Salve Regina then fired three shots wide of the cage as Springfield earned the 10-8 win over the Seahawks on the road.

Springfield will wrap up its regular season slate at Wheaton College next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
