Norton, Mass. – April 26, 2025 – For the first time since 2016, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team completed an undefeated conference slate and earned the outright New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title following today's 15-12 win at Wheaton College.
Springfield, which will be the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Championship Tournament, finished the regular season with a record of 9-6 overall and 7-0 in conference play, while Wheaton saw its 2025 campaign come to a close at 7-8, 1-6. Springfield will await the winner of the No. 4/5 matchup for a semifinal contest next Thursday at 7:00 pm on Stagg Field.
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) registered five goals to power Springfield's offense, while with five points of his own on three goals and two assists
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) in just his sophomore season eclipsed 100 career points.
Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) also registered three goals and two assists for five points this afternoon for the Pride. Defensively,
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) registered 11 ground balls, while seven different student-athletes posted a caused turnover.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was dominant on the face-off winning 21-of-28 attempts, while in net
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made eight saves. As a team, Springfield held a 49-31 differential in shots, a 39-26 margin in ground balls and went 26-for-29 on the clear.
Wheaton held a 4-3 edge after 15 minutes of play, but a run of four straight goals that began with an unassisted strike from Nocito ultimately gave Springfield a 7-4 lead midway through the second. The spurt also saw Degnan bury a feed from Burgmyer and Stensrud record his third of the year off a pass from Tierney before Tierney and Stensrud connected with 5:58 to play in the half.
The homestanding Lyons got a pair of goals back in the quarter, but Springfield took a 9-6 lead into the break outscoring Wheaton 6-2 in the stanza. Springfield extended its lead to 12-8 early in the fourth following goals from Nocito, Tierney and Degnan, but Wheaton answered with back-to-back goals from Jack Board and a strike by Charlie Goodrich making it just a one goal Pride lead, 12-11, with 11:12 remaining in regulation.
Stensrud completed a feed from Burgmyer igniting a string of three straight Springfield goals to push the advantage up to four – enough to seal the road win.
Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) connected with Degnan before Nocito found the back of the net for the fifth time on the day to complete the 15-12 final.
