Springfield, Mass. – May 1, 2025 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team scored ten straight goals en route to a 15-9 win over Salve Regina University in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament Semifinals on Thursday evening on Stagg Field.
Springfield, the top-seed in the bracket, improved to 10-6 overall and will host second-seed Babson College in the NEWMAC title game on Saturday at 1:00 pm on Stagg Field. This will be the first time that the NEWMAC Championship game will be played in Springfield since 2017 when the Pride defeated Clark University 18-10.
For the second straight game,
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) powered Springfield's offense with four goals.
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) and
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn) added three goals and one assist apiece for four points,
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) tallied two goals and one assist apiece for three points and
Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) notched one goal and one assist for two points. Defensively,
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) led the way with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won 13-of-21 face off attempts he took and added six ground balls.
In net,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) and
Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) combined for seven saves for the Pride, while Andrew Hazard registered 21 stops for the Seahawks – the third most in a single game across the entire league this season.
As a team, Springfield held a 55-27 differential in shots, a 38-27 margin in ground balls and went 26-for-27 on the clear.
After Burgmyer tallied the first goal of the game just 50-seconds into the contest, Salve Regina ripped off four straight goals for a 4-1 lead early in the second. Tierney connected with Stensrud before back-to-back strikes by Nocito evened the score at four with six minutes left in the half.
With 3:56 to play before the break, Chris Koltzan put Salve Regina back out in front, 5-4, but a goal from Soldo off a feed from Degnan knotted the score at five and began what was a streak of ten straight goals for the Pride – a stretch that lasted well into the fourth quarter.
The 10-0 scoring run was highlighted by a pair of goals by Springfield playing a man-down as Nocito and Tierney both snuck the ball past Hazard before Burgmyer and Nocito capped the run to make the score 15-5. Salve Regina scored the final four goals of the game over the final 3:24, but it wasn't enough as Springfield took the semifinal by a 15-9 final.
