Softball Blanks Western New England Twice in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Springfield, Mass. – April 23, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team picked up a pair of non-conference shutout victories over Western New England University, 5-0 & 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon on Potter Field.

Springfield improved to 21-9 overall and reached the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season, while Western New England fell to 16-13-1.

In the doubleheader, both Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.)recorded three hits and a run with Seyfert also driving in a pair of runs, while Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) added two hits, run and a walk to her stat line. Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Abby Robinson (East Lyme, Conn.) combined for 14 shutout innings, allowed just seven total hits and struck out nine in the doubleheader sweep for the Pride.

Game One: Springfield 5, Western New England 0

After a scoreless first, Springfield struck for three runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a bases loaded walk by Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) and a two-run single by Seyfert. Gendron began the inning with a single before Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) lined a single to right setting up the walk by Ponticello.

Pecchia scored Springfield's fourth run of the day in the third frame on a wild pitch, while an infield RBI single in the fourth by Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) made it 5-0.

DeRosa retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and despite allowing two runners to reach in the seventh, struck out back-to-back batters and got the final out of the game on a foul out to complete the shutout victory.

Game Two: Springfield 2, Western New England 0

Back-to-back singles from Haley Ball (Westbrook, Maine) and Pecchia followed by a passed ball put runners on second and third for Gendron, who drove in Ball on a groundout to second in the bottom of the first. The game remained at 1-0 in favor of Springfield until the bottom of the sixth when a fielder's choice RBI from Puskas plated Lyndsay Donston (South Windsor, Conn.) for the 2-0 edge.

Robinson allowed just one hit to the Golden Bears over the first four frames in the circle and then sat down Western New England 1-2-3 in the seventh to complete her first complete game shutout win.

Springfield will host Wheaton College in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3:00 pm on Potter Field.
