Springfield, Mass. – April 26, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team split its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with Wheaton College on Friday afternoon on Potter Field. Wheaton edged the Pride 3-2 in the opener before Springfield stormed back for a 9-1, five inning win in the nightcap.
Springfield and Wheaton both pushed its overall records to 22-10. The Pride now sit at 9-5 in conference play in a three-way tie for second place in the league, while the Lyons are 7-7 in the NEWMAC. Both teams have six conference games to play prior to the start of the postseason on May 5.
In the doubleheader against the Lyons,
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) drove in three runs and recorded both of her hits as doubles, while
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 4-for-7 and scored three times and
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs as well. Between the two contests, Springfield batted .385 with 20 hits including four doubles and only struck out four times against the Wheaton pitching staff.
Game One: Wheaton 3, Springfield 2
A sacrifice fly by Pecchia gave Springfield a 1-0 edge through one inning before Wheaton knotted the game at one in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Juliette Zito.
A leadoff single to center by
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) and a walk by Pecchia set up an RBI knock from
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) giving Springfield a 2-1 lead through four. Wheaton, however responded with an RBI single by Madi Miller in the fifth and an RBI double by Grace DiBacco in the sixth to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Springfield put the tying run on second base in the sixth and the seventh, but Wheaton starter Sofia De La Rosa induced a game-ending double play to secure game one for the Lyons, 3-2.
Game Two: Springfield 9, Wheaton 1 (5 Innings)
Springfield's bats came alive in game two as the Pride pumped out nine runs on 13 hits and also took advantage of six Wheaton errors to secure the split. Meanwhile in the circle,
Abby Robinson (East Lyme, Conn.) held the Lyons to just three hits and one run as she improved to 4-1 for the Pride.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the first, Gendron gave Springfield a 1-0 lead on a hard hit ball up the middle. Pecchia then led off a four run bottom of the third inning for Springfield with a double to the gap eventually scoring on an error. Then with two runners in scoring position, an RBI single by
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) plated Puskas to make it 3-1 before an RBI single by
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) paired with another Wheaton error made it 5-1 through three.
Robinson retired Wheaton in order in the fourth and surrendered just a walk and a single in the fifth setting up Springfield's bats to run rule the Lyons in the bottom of the frame. Springfield quickly loaded the bases with an error allowing Katsetos to score the Pride's sixth run before a two-run double by Pecchia made it 8-1. Gendron came to the plate with Eckles – the game winning run on third – and drilled a double to center to secure the 9-1 victory.
