New London, Conn. – April 29, 2025 – In its final midweek New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the 2025 campaign, the Springfield College baseball team fell to Coast Guard by a 5-3 final.
Coast Guard maintained a tie for second in the league with a conference record of 10-4 (22-12 overall), while Springfield fell to 4-10 NEWMAC (11-22 overall) and is out of the postseason picture this year with only two NEWMAC games left on the slate.
Coast Guard took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Parker Madden drilled a three-run homer over the fence in left field. The Bears eventually led 5-0 through five following a sacrifice fly in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.
It took Springfield until the seventh inning to break the shutout.
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) began the frame with a single and then proceeded to steal second. In the next at-bat,
Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) notched his third home run of the season to cut Springfield's deficit to three. Balchius then drove in his third run of the day in the eight on an RBI knock to center scoring
Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.), but Springfield was set down 1-2-3 in the ninth to cap the 5-3 final.
Vito Giordano earned the win (6-1) as he pitched the first six innings for Coast Guard scattering two hits and striking out two before Jackson Dorsey earned the save over the final two frames.
Springfield will travel down the road to Western New England for a non-conference tilt on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
