Springfield, Mass. – April 29, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team defeated Manhattanville University twice in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon on Potter Field. Springfield took the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 6-3.
Springfield, which surpassed the 25 win mark for the fourth consecutive season and for the 16th time in Division III program history, improved to 26-10, while Manhattanville dropped to 24-8. Springfield handed the Valiants their first doubleheader sweep since May 7 of last season as today was a battle between the 43rd and 45th NCAA Power Index (NPI) teams in the country and has now won 14 of its last 16 games.
In a balanced effort at the plate, seven different student-athletes recorded a hit in the twin bill highlighted by a 3-for-3 day by
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.). The first year also drew four walks on the day.
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) recorded a team-best three RBI, while
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.)continued her torrid pace at the plate going 3-for-6 with two runs, a triple, two RBI and a walk.
Game One: Springfield 3, Manhattanville 1
All of the scoring in game one came in the second inning. After the Valiants took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame,
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) came across with the tying run on an RBI triple by Ponticello. RBI singles from both
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) and
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) gave Springfield starter
Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, N.Y.) all the run support she needed.
McCauliffe improved to 6-1 with a complete game effort that saw her strike out four, scatter five hits and allow just the one run.
Game Two: Springfield 6, Manhattanville 3
Springfield quickly put up six runs over the first two innings for an early 6-0 advantage. A bases loaded walk broke the scoreless tie in the first before RBI knocks from
Haley Ball (Westbrook, Maine) and Katsetos made it 3-0. Then in the second, a two-run triple from Gendron and an RBI double to the gap from Ponticello made it 6-0.
Abby Robinson (East Lyme, Conn.) was efficient in the circle allowing just two hits through the first five frames. Manhattanville chipped away and put up a pair of runs in the sixth as well as one in the seventh, but the first-year left the game-tying run in the dugout to complete the sweep.
Springfield, which played its final regular season home games of the 2025 campaign, will travel to Smith College for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2:00 pm.
