Northampton, Mass. – May 2, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team earned a two game sweep at Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Springfield won the opener 7-1 and the nightcap 3-0.
Springfield improved to 29-10 overall and to 13-5 in NEWMAC play with two more games to following tomorrow in the regular season finale at Salve Regina University, while Smith closed its season at 7-29, 3-17. One win for Springfield tomorrow, will secure the sixth 30 win season for the Pride in Division III program history. Previously, Springfield reached the 30 win mark in 2000 (30), 2001 (41), 2003 (33), 2017 (32) and 2023 (35).
In the twin bill,
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) and
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) led Springfield with three hits as two of three of Pecchia's hits were doubles.
Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) registered two hits and four RBI,
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) notched two hits and three RBI, while
Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) both roped a pair of hits for the Pride.
In the circle,
Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, N.Y.) tossed a three hit complete game shutout in the nightcap lowering her ERA on the season to 0.58 to improve to 7-1 on the year, while in game one,
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) surrendered just five hits and one run pushing her record to 10-6 on the year. As a staff, Springfield ranks third in the conference in ERA in 2025 only behind Babson and Wheaton.
Game One: Springfield 7, Smith 1
After two shutout innings, Springfield broke the game open with four runs in the top of the third. Seyfert began the frame with a single to center, stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on a double by DeRosa. Pecchia then doubled home DeRosa before a two run single to right from Manzone plated both Ponticello and Pecchia for the 4-0 lead.
Puskas and
Lyndsay Donston (South Windsor, Conn.) both scored on Katsetos' at bat which ended on an error by the second baseman making the score 6-0 before Katsetos drove in Ponticello in the seventh to account for the 7-1 final.
Game Two: Springfield 3, Smith 0
All three runs in game two came from Springfield in the top of the fifth inning. Both McCauliffe and Bailey Gray were perfect through three plus innings as Kat Wajerski broke up McCauliffe's bid in the fourth before Gendron broke up Grays' bid in the fifth.
Gendron and Ponticello began the fifth with singles before they moved to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Pinch runner
Taylor Falotico (Windsor, Conn.) scored on an error by the catcher before Manzone drove in
Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) and Puskas for the 3-0 advantage.
McCauliffe set Smith down 1-2-3 in the sixth and despite allowing two base runners in the seventh got the final out of the game to complete the shutout victory for the Pride.
