Norton, Mass. – April 4, 2025 – The Springfield College men's tennis team defeated Wheaton College, 6-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on the road this afternoon.
Springfield picked up its tenth win of the year and is now 10-2 overall and 2-1 in NEWMAC play. The Pride have reached the ten win mark for the second time in three seasons under head coach
Tanner DeVarennes and for just the third time since 2000. Wheaton, meanwhile, dropped to 2-9, 1-3.
Springfield began with a trio of wins in doubles play.
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) and
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) at No. 1 and
Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) and
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico) at No. 2 both won by 6-2 final scores.
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) and
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) also won 6-3 at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
Springfield went on to win five of the six points in singles play en route to the 6-1 final. Guzman picked up a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2 and Huppke was victorious 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. The other three points Springfield won came in three sets. Villanueva Abad topped Pablo Munoz, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3,
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) defeated Jake Murray, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) bested Daniel Bor, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6.
Springfield will host Emerson College on Sunday at noon in NEWMAC action.
